Going into work, I half-dropped my full coffee mug, caught it, and said “ninja skillz” aloud to myself. Some guy heard me, and then we had to share an elevator for 8 floors of utter silence.
I’m definitely asking for Tangled for Christmas. That movie just makes me so happy!

Roadtrips are my favorite budget vacations. Four people, one car, and hours upon hours of driving to a brand new destination.

This summer, I’m heading to Montreal for the first time. The only other Canadian city I’ve ever traveled to is Toronto, which I loved. I hear that Montreal is very European-esque (plus, there’s awesome public transportation systems and bike paths throughout the city), and these are some of the things I’d love to check out:
- The world’s largest Jazz Festival, with a ton of free performances in the city.
- Public Markets/Restaurants: Montreal is famous for its food!
- Walk/bike up Mount Royal: From the summit, there’s a great panoramic view of Montreal.
- Old Montreal: historic part of the city, supposedly very old-European-village-ish
- Montreal Botanical Gardens: 31 specialized gardens, including the largest Chinese Garden outside Asia and a Japanese Garden with a tearoom and fabulous bonsai collection.
- Outdoor Ballroom Dancing: June-August, 3 nights/week. Always free lessons for a diverse crowd of people.
- Museums: There are a lot, from fine art to contemporary art, plus science museums, etc.
- Notre-Dame Basilica: Apparently it’s gorgeous, and a must-see.
- En Prison tour: 90-minute tours of the former Trois-Rivières prison, En Prison. The tours are led by former convicts.
Sounds awesome, right? And all of this is on a $500 total budget, which you can’t beat for 5 days! Plus, there’s the whole Underground City, which is a concept I’m madly in love with (those crazy Canadians think of everything!).
And thanks to a tip from my travel-veteran boss, we’re renting a condo in the city via HomeAway.com instead of staying at a hotel, for a more authentic Montreal-ian experience! (But for hotels, gotta love TripAdvisor.)
If you’ve ever been to Montreal, let me know of any must-sees I’ve missed!
THE WINDOW! If you have a single creative bone in your body, you must see the window in this post!
I got serious about my writing twenty years ago. Since then I’ve written in a closet, in an attic, in a basement, on the front seat of the car, at basketball and soccer and swim practices, in more hotels than I’d like to remember, and for two memorable years whilst living in a small apartment,…

Kaylee: Everyone’s got somebody. Wash, tell me I’m pretty.
Wash: Were I unwed, I would take you in a manly fashion.
Kaylee: ‘Cause I’m pretty?
